Missing insulation is actually a very common occurrence. Either the insulation has settled over time, it got pushed to the side, or it was never installed properly in the first place. We find this problem frequently in both ceilings and in walls. Fortunately in the attic this can be solved fairly easily with blown in cellulose insulation. Using a dense pack cellulose method, voids in the walls can also be remedied.
